The theme of parental miserliness occurs in his works. At 21 he went to London to clerk for a solicitor. He then began working for a magazine called Women. When he noticed the poor material being submitted he began writing a serial for the periodical. First published in 1910. Edwin Clayhanger is the central figure in this portrayal of Victorian lower-middle-class society. As a shy young man, Edwin is bullied by his father, Darius, but he succeeds in developing his interests in spite of a restrictive environment. One of Edwin's interests is Hilda Lessways, a young woman from Staffordshire. Hilda proves to be independent and enigmatic, while Edwin proves that there are many ways to view love.This coming-of-age story set in the Midlands of Victorian England follows Edwin Clayhanger as he leaves school, takes over the family business and falls in love. Edwin Clayhanger's father, Darius, has risen from an extremely poor background, which Bennett repeatedly returns to, to become a prominent printer in Bursley, one of Bennett's "Five Towns" – his fictionalised version of the six towns of the Staffordshire Potteries. Edwin is not aware of his father's history and takes his family's affluence for granted. He allows his ambition to become an architect to be overruled by his father and instead becomes an office junior in his father's business. Among the first works of fiction in English by a North American writer of Asian descent, the stories collected in Mrs. Spring Fragrance present a complex and sympathetic picture of life in American Chinese communities in the early twentieth century. Far’s seemingly simple stories of family life reveal the tensions created by cultural assimilation. Rather than embracing any particular identity, the stories show a cosmopolitan sensibility that embraces “the motley throng of all nationalities’ in the streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown.   Mrs. Spring Fragrance was a popular short story collection by Sui Sin Far, pen name of Chinese-British-Canadian-American writer Edith Maude Eaton. The work is notable for being the earliest book of fiction published in the United States by an author of mixed Chinese and white descent. Although the stories in the collection were written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they were not compiled into a single book until 1912. The original publisher was A. C. McClurg and Company of Chicago. A new scholarly edition of the book, based on the McClurg edition, was released in October 2011 by Broadview Press.   The stories are divided into two halves, "Mrs. Spring Fragrance" for adults, and "Tales of Chinese Children" for children. Set in Seattle and San Francisco, they reflect the struggles and joys in the daily lives of Chinese families in North America. Particularly poignant are the stories delineating the cultural conflicts of Eurasians and recent immigrants. In "In the Land of the Free", Eaton shows the suffering inflicted by discriminatory immigration laws.

He rented a small farm up in Cumberland, somewhere towards the sea-coast; but he was perhaps too young and inexperienced to have the charge of land and cattle: anyhow, his affairs did not prosper, and he fell into ill health, and died of consumption before they had been three years man and wife, leaving my mother a young widow of twenty, with a little child only just able to walk, and the farm on her hands for four years more by the lease, with half the stock on it dead, or sold off one by one to pay the more pressing debts, and with no money to purchase more, or even to buy the provisions needed for the small consumption of every day.

Young Nanette works as a sort of lady’s maid and manager for Madame Tradutorri, a world famous opera singer. As children, Tradutorri and Nanette’s mother where BFFs. Fast forward some years: Tradutorri found Nanette at her mother’s death bed when she was ten and took the girl under her care as a servant and companion. Fast forward ten more years and Nanette has become Tradutorri’s invaluable right-hand-woman, her confidante and friend.A bomb is dropped. The head waiter at the restaurant they frequent when in New York is in love with Nanette. They want to marry.“Bah!” Tradutorri scoffs, “Must there always be a ‘gentleman,’ even with you?”Tradutorri thinks fast and assumes she can hire the head waiter to be her “man” and install him as the steward of her Paris home. She’ll still have Nanette and Nanette can have her husband. Unfortunately, Nanette says that will not work because Mr Head Waiter will not allow her to work and travel once married. “He will have his wife to himself or not at all.” (Run, Nanette!)You’ll have to read the story for yourself to see how things turn out for Tradutorri and Nanette. There is musing that we’ve seen in other Cather stories on the sacrifices that artists must make to succeed, namely avoid relationships and especially marriage.
